Apfel

Also known as Strabat or Schtrabat (Russian).

A German term used to describe the showy finale of certain aerial acrobatic acts, where one of the gymnasts appears to slip and falls rapidly, removing their support or flying from their partner's hands, before becoming suspended on the safety rod or cord at the last moment. The cord itself may be set to fly into a decorative prop, providing a colourful display when tension is applied to it. Some such cords may have firecrackers set into their links to add an audio and visual  'punch' to the payoff.
